Birding
Lake Conestee Nature Park is rated by many experienced birders as one of the best birding sites in the Upstate of South Carolina. It is featured as a South Carolina birding hot-spot on e-bird and on the Carolina Bird Club and Greenville County Bird Club websites.
The Greenville County Bird Club conducts a guided bird trip in the Park on the third Saturday of every month. Details can be found on the Outings page of the Greenville County Bird Club website.
Since December 2006 the Greenville County Bird Club has been collecting reports of birds in the Park. The list of total species and the species reported by month are updated monthly.
The wide variety of bird species reported in the Park is a consequence of the variety of habitat found there: lake, pine and mixed deciduous woodlands, transitional meadow, the Reedy River and extensive swampland (due in part to the energetic activity of the local beaver population).
Birders are requested to send their observations and/or questions to paulserridge@gcbirdclub.org.
Lake Conestee Nature Park is part of a global network of places recognized for its outstanding value to bird conservation. On November 15, 2011, the Audubon South Carolina, the National Audubon Society and BirdLife International accepted LCNP as an Important Bird Area (IBA) of Global Significance on the basis of LCNP far exceeding the threshold of ninety Rusty Blackbirds present during the winter season.
